Which Manufacturers Use Wet Belts?
Wet belts are used across several manufacturers and engine families. Some vehicles have a wet belt driving the camshaft timing. Others have a smaller wet belt driving the oil pump only.
Ford
1.0 EcoBoost, 1.1 Ti-VCT and 2.0 EcoBlue are the main TGPP wet belt enquiries. Later 1.0 EcoBoost engines can use a chain for cam timing with a separate oil-pump belt.
Peugeot

Wet Belt vs Timing Chain
Quick answer: A wet belt is a reinforced rubber belt that runs inside the engine in engine oil. A timing chain uses metal links. A dry cambelt is a conventional rubber timing belt that runs outside the engine under a cover.

A timing chain is not automatically maintenance-free and a wet belt is not automatically unreliable. Correct oil, servicing and the exact engine design all matter.

Short journeys, frequent stop-start driving, incorrect oil, missed servicing and contaminated oil can all affect engine and belt condition. Your vehicle-specific manufacturer schedule should always take priority.
What Happens When a Wet Belt Fails?
Quick answer: Wet belt deterioration can release belt material into the engine oil. On affected engine designs, this material can restrict the oil pickup and reduce oil pressure. A belt that loses timing can also cause severe internal engine damage.
- Belt material can contaminate the oil. As the belt deteriorates, particles can enter the engine lubrication system.
- The oil pickup can become restricted. On affected engines, belt debris can collect around the oil pickup strainer.
- Oil pressure can fall. Reduced oil flow can put bearings, turbochargers and other lubricated components at risk.
- The belt can lose its timing. If the timing belt jumps or fails, piston and valve contact can occur on interference engines.
- Engine damage can become extremely expensive. A failure that starts with belt deterioration can ultimately require major engine repairs or an engine replacement.
Stop and investigate immediately if you see an oil pressure warning light. Do not continue driving simply because the engine still sounds normal.

A wet belt should not automatically make you reject a car. The bigger concern is buying a vehicle without evidence of correct servicing, correct oil and appropriate belt maintenance.

Yes. Timing chains can stretch and their guides and tensioners can wear. A chain does not automatically mean an engine is maintenance-free.
