Tyre pressure warning light (TPMS) on?
The TPMS light (a flat tyre shape with an exclamation mark) means the car thinks a tyre is low on pressure or the system has a fault. Check the pressures first. If the light stays on, or flashes and then stays on, bring it in. A flashing light that then stays lit usually means a system fault rather than low pressure.
Common causes
A slow puncture, tyres that are low after a cold snap, a sensor with a flat battery, a damaged or corroded sensor or valve, a sensor that was not reset after a tyre change, or a new tyre or wheel that has not been programmed to the car.
What we do
We read the system with diagnostic equipment, check each tyre and sensor, then repair the puncture, replace the sensor or reset the system as needed. We tell you what we found and what it costs before we fix it.
Two types of TPMS
Direct: a battery-powered sensor in each wheel. The battery eventually runs out, usually after 5 to 10 years. Indirect: uses the ABS wheel speed sensors and needs resetting after pressures are corrected or tyres are changed.
It can fail an MOT. On a car fitted with TPMS, the MOT fails if the warning light stays on or the system is faulty. TPMS has been compulsory on new cars since 2012. Get it sorted before your test, or book it in with us and we will check it as part of your MOT.
The light might also be one of several on your dash. See our diagnostics page for what the other warning lights mean.
How to get a tyre quote
It takes a minute. Tyre prices depend on size, brand and speed rating, so we need a few details.
Send your reg on WhatsApp or by phone, or your tyre size from the sidewall, like 205/55 R16.
Tell us what you want: premium, mid-range or budget, and how many tyres.
We quote and book you in. We tell you if we have your size in stock or how long it will take to get.
Legal minimum tread depth: 1.6mm
The legal limit is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round. Driving on an illegal tyre can mean a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points, per tyre. We recommend replacing at 3mm, because stopping distances in the wet get noticeably longer as the tread wears.
Signs you need new tyres
Do not wait for a blowout. If you notice any of these, get them checked.
Tread at or near 3mm
Legal to 1.6mm, but grip in the wet drops off well before that. Plan the replacement.
Bulges or blisters
A bulge on the sidewall means the inside of the tyre is damaged. Replace it straight away and do not drive far on it.
A tyre that keeps going down
Topping up the same tyre usually means a puncture, a leaking valve or a damaged wheel. Some can be repaired.
Vibration or pulling
Can be a tyre fault, unbalanced wheels or alignment. We can find out which.
Cracking or age
Rubber hardens with age. Check tyres from around 5 years old, and most manufacturers advise replacing at 10 years whatever the tread.
Uneven wear
Wear on one edge or in patches usually points to alignment, suspension or pressure problems, so fix the cause as well as the tyre.
Premium to budget
We can supply tyres at every price point, so you are not stuck with one option. Tell us your budget and we will find the best tyre for it.
Premium and mid-range
Budget
Not on the list? Ask. We can source most tyres.
Why get your tyres here
TGPP-Autocare is run by Tom and Pat. We are an independent garage, not a fast-fit chain, so a tyre is rarely the only thing we look at.
Honest advice
If your tyres are fine, we say so. If they need replacing, we tell you why and show you.
We fix the cause, not just the tyre
Uneven wear can come from alignment or worn suspension. We can fix those too, so the new tyres last.
TPMS handled properly
A tyre pressure light needs diagnosing, not just resetting. We find the cause and fix it.
MOT and service at the same visit
Book your MOT with a service and the MOT is discounted. We check your tyres as part of it.
12-month guarantee
Repair work we carry out comes with a 12-month parts and labour guarantee.
Spread the cost
New tyres are a big bill. We offer 0% finance through PaymentAssist, no minimum spend, over 3 to 9 months.

Usually a tyre is low on pressure, there is a slow puncture, or the system has a fault such as a flat sensor battery or a damaged sensor. Check the pressures first. If the light stays on, we can diagnose the cause and fix it.
Yes, on a car fitted with TPMS. If the warning light stays on or the system is faulty, it fails. TPMS has been compulsory on new cars since 2012.
No. Only damage in the repairable part of the tread, within the size limits of British Standard BS AU 159, can be safely repaired. Sidewall or shoulder damage cannot be repaired, and some run-flat tyres cannot be repaired either. We tell you honestly which it is.
If the tyre is only slightly soft, you can sometimes pump it up to the correct pressure and drive carefully and directly to us. A tyre that is flat or very low should not be driven on, because it can be damaged beyond repair and can cause loss of control. If you are unsure, call us first.
1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the whole tyre. Driving on an illegal tyre can mean a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points per tyre. We recommend replacing at 3mm.
It is best to replace them in pairs on the same axle, with the new tyres on the rear where possible. Mismatched tread depths can affect handling, especially in the wet. If you only need one, we tell you what we recommend.
It is on the sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V. 205 is the width in millimetres, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, R16 is the wheel diameter in inches, 91 is the load index and V is the speed rating. If you send us your reg, you do not need to read it.
