How much is a Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt replacement?

At TGPP-Autocare in Stevenage, a Ford 1.0 EcoBoost wet belt replacement is £1,100 including VAT, fixed. It covers the wet belt, oil pump drive belt, water pump, tensioner, seals, an oil strainer clean, Ford-spec 5W20 oil and filter, and a coolant top-up. The job takes about 8 hours and we keep the car overnight so the sealant can cure. It applies to the older 1.0 EcoBoost, with the turbo at the front of the engine. Ford changed to a timing chain in 2018 and 2019, so check yours first. Every job has a 12-month parts and labour warranty and 0% finance is available.

Why every part is in the package

This is more than swapping a belt. We replace the parts that wear alongside it and clean the part that blocks when a belt breaks down, so the job lasts.

Both belts

The wet belt that drives the camshafts, and the oil pump drive belt, both replaced with OEM or OEM-equivalent parts.

Water pump

Replaced as standard while everything is apart, so you do not pay for the same labour twice later.

Tensioner, seals and bolt

New tensioner, cam cover seal, crankshaft pulley seal and pulley bolt. They see the same heat and oil as the belt.

Oil strainer clean

The oil pick-up strainer is cleaned to remove belt debris. This is the part that blocks and starves the engine of oil.

Oil control solenoid

Removed, cleaned and refitted, because it can also collect debris from the old belt.

Ford-spec oil and filter

Ford-recommended 5W20 oil and a new filter. The wrong oil is hard on the belt, so we use the right one.

Coolant top-up

Coolant topped up to the correct specification after the water pump is replaced.

Engine health check

With the engine open we look for other wear and leaks, and tell you what we find.

Comparing quotes? Check what is in them

Wet belt prices vary a lot, and a lower number often leaves things out. Before you book anywhere, check the quote includes:

  • The wet belt and the oil pump drive belt
  • A new water pump, tensioner, seals and pulley bolt
  • The oil pick-up strainer cleaned
  • The oil control solenoid cleaned
  • Ford-spec 5W20 oil and a new filter
  • A written warranty on the work

Ours includes every one, for £1,100. If another quote does not, ask why.

What happens if the wet belt fails

The belt runs in the engine oil. As it ages it breaks down and sheds small pieces of rubber into the oil. Those pieces collect at the oil pick-up strainer in the sump and can block it.

Oil starvation

A blocked strainer means the oil pump cannot pick up enough oil. The engine can be damaged very quickly, sometimes before a warning light has time to be noticed.

Timing failure

If the belt itself slips or snaps, the engine loses its timing. That can mean a wrecked engine and a bill that can run to thousands of pounds. Replacing the belt in time costs a fraction of that.

Ford originally described this as a life-of-the-car belt. In practice that has not proved realistic, which is why we recommend replacing it on age and mileage rather than waiting for a problem.

Warning signs

Many belts give no warning at all. If you notice any of these, get the car looked at as soon as you can.

Oil pressure warning light

Stop driving as soon as it is safe. A blocked strainer is a common cause. Do not carry on to see if it clears.

Rattling or knocking at the front

Especially on a cold start. Can point to belt or tensioner wear.

Misfires or rough running

If the belt starts to slip, the engine can hesitate, stumble or lose power.

Engine management light

Can flag a timing fault. Do not ignore a light that comes on with rough running.

Debris in the oil

A metallic sheen or black flecks on the dipstick or at a service mean the belt is breaking up.

No belt change on file

If the car is nearing 8 years old or 75,000 to 100,000 miles and the belt has never been done, it is time to plan it.

When should it be replaced?

We recommend planning the replacement by 8 years or 75,000 to 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Heavy use of short journeys and stop-start driving is harder on the belt.

Under 8 years and 75,000 miles

Usually fine. Keep your oil changes on time with the correct oil.

8 to 10 years, or 75,000 to 100,000 miles

Plan the job. This is the window to book it in, before it becomes urgent.

Over 10 years or 100,000 miles

Overdue. The risk goes up every month. Get it checked and booked.

Buying a used EcoBoost? Check the turbo position and the service history first. If it is the wet belt engine and there is no record of the belt being done, allow for it in the price. Send us the reg and we will tell you which engine it has.

How the job works

It is a long job, about 8 hours of labour. Plan to drop the car off and collect it the next day.

1

Confirm the engine and book

Book online any time, or send us your reg first and we check it has the wet belt engine.

2

Drop the car off

Bring it to Unit 8, Chells Industrial Units, Stevenage. We take the keys and tell you when to expect a call.

3

We do the job

Belts, water pump, tensioner and seals replaced, strainer and solenoid cleaned, then fresh Ford-spec oil, a new filter and coolant.

4

The sealant cures overnight

We keep the car overnight so the sealant cures properly before the engine is started. Rushing this is how leaks start.

5

Test and health check

The engine is started, tested and checked over, and we tell you what we found.

6

Collect the next day

You pay on collection. The work carries a 12-month parts and labour warranty.

How finance works

Not sure if your EcoBoost has a wet belt?

Not all of them do. Ford changed the 1.0 EcoBoost from a wet belt to a timing chain for the camshaft drive between 2018 and 2019. The quickest check is to open the bonnet and look at where the turbo is.

Older Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engine with the wet belt, turbo at the front Wet belt engine

Turbo at the front of the engine, facing the radiator, with a big heat shield. This is the one that needs the wet belt replacing.

Newer Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engine with a timing chain, turbo at the back Chain engine

Turbo at the back, facing the windscreen. The camshaft is driven by a timing chain, so there is no wet cam belt to replace.

Which Fords had the wet belt engine?

Model Wet belt years Chain engine
Fiesta2012 to 20172018 on (all mild hybrids)
Focus2012 to 2018Mid-2018 on
EcoSport2014 to 20182018 on
B-Max2012 to 2017Never changed
C-Max and Grand C-Max2013 to 2018Never changed
Mondeo, Galaxy, S-Max2015 to 2018Never changed
Transit Connect and Courier2013 to 2018Later ones: check the turbo
PumaNoneAll chain (2019 on)

Use the turbo position as the final word. The changeover was gradual and some late cars were still built with the old engine. For example, we have seen a 2022 Fiesta with the old wet belt engine.

What about the newer chain engines? They have no wet cam belt, but they still use a small wet belt to drive the oil pump. Ford does not list it as a service item, so the best protection is regular oil changes with the correct oil. We understand Ford recalled some automatic versions over the oil pump belt, so it is worth checking your car at gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall.

£1,100 including VAT, fixed. It covers the wet belt, oil pump drive belt, water pump, tensioner, seals and pulley bolt, an oil strainer clean, Ford-spec 5W20 oil and filter, and a coolant top-up. 0% finance is available.

A timing belt that runs inside the engine, soaked in engine oil, instead of outside it. Ford used it on the older 1.0 EcoBoost to save space. Over time the oil breaks the rubber down and bits of belt can block the oil pick-up strainer.

Only the older engines. Open the bonnet and look at the turbo. If it is at the front, facing the radiator, it is the wet belt engine. If it is at the back, facing the windscreen, it is the chain engine. Send us your reg and we will confirm.

Not a wet cam belt. The Puma and all the 48V mild hybrids have the chain engine. They still have a small wet belt for the oil pump, which Ford does not list as a service item, so keep your oil changes up with the correct oil.

We recommend planning it by 8 years or 75,000 to 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Do not wait for warning signs, because a failing belt can damage the engine before any light comes on.

About 8 hours of labour, and a seized bolt can add to that. We keep the car overnight so the sealant cures before the engine is started. You drop it off and collect it the next day.

The belt sheds rubber into the oil, which can block the oil strainer and starve the engine of oil. That can lead to oil pump failure, timing faults or engine seizure. An engine replacement can cost thousands of pounds.

The water pump, tensioner, seals and pulley bolt are all behind the same cover and see the same heat and oil as the belt. Replacing them while the engine is apart avoids paying for the same labour again later.
