Why we use genuine Ford parts where it counts

The EcoBlue wet belt system is unforgiving of fitment shortcuts. These are the parts where we insist on the genuine Ford component, and why.

Genuine Ford timing cover

Aftermarket covers can have tolerances that affect the oil seal around the belt. The genuine cover fits as designed and protects the belt from day one.

Genuine Ford sump

The sump has to seal correctly to keep the oil level right and prevent leaks that can speed up belt wear.

Genuine Ford bolt

The crankshaft bolt is a torque-to-yield part that should only be used once. We fit a new genuine bolt and tighten it to specification.

The right oil

The belt runs in engine oil, so the wrong specification wears it faster. We use the correct Ford-specified oil for your engine, and a new filter.

Oil strainer cleaned

Belt debris collects at the oil pick-up strainer. Cleaning it stops the problem repeating after the new belt goes on.

Inspection and road test

With the engine open we look for leaks and other wear, then road test it before it goes back to you.

About the belt itself: we do not fit a genuine Ford belt. We use a high-quality OEM-equivalent belt that meets Ford's specification, which is common among independent specialists. The cover, sump, bolt and oil are the parts where genuine Ford matters most. We will always tell you exactly what we fit and why.

Comparing quotes? Check what is in them

Wet belt prices vary, and a lower number often leaves things out. Before you book anywhere, check the quote includes:

  • The timing belt and the oil pump drive belt
  • New tensioner and idlers
  • A genuine Ford cover, sump and bolt
  • The oil pick-up strainer cleaned
  • The correct Ford-spec oil and a new filter
  • A written warranty on the work

Ours includes every one. If another quote does not, ask why.

Ford cut the interval. Has yours caught up?

The EcoBlue timing belt runs in the engine oil, alongside an oil pump drive belt. Ford has reduced the service interval for the belt, tensioner and idlers on the Transit and Transit Custom from 10 years or 150,000 miles to 6 years or 100,000 miles, saying it was to address belt life problems caused by oil dilution and how vehicles are used.

Many vans are still on the old figure

The change is a problem for owners who plan around the old interval. A van between 6 and 10 years old can be overdue without anyone realising.

Failure is expensive

A failed belt can block the oil strainer, bend valves and damage pistons. Engine repairs often run to thousands of pounds, plus the time the van is off the road.

Stop-start and short-journey use is the hardest on the belt. If that is how your vehicle works, do not wait for the full interval. The same 6 years or 100,000 miles is generally quoted for other 2.0 EcoBlue models, so check yours.

Warning signs

Many belts give no warning at all, so go by age and mileage. If you notice any of these, get the vehicle looked at as soon as you can.

Oil pressure warning light

Stop driving as soon as it is safe. A blocked strainer is a common cause. Do not carry on to see if it clears.

Rattling or ticking

Engine noise from the front or top of the engine, especially on a cold start, can point to belt wear.

Loss of power or rough running

If the belt slips, the engine can hesitate, misfire or lose power under load.

Engine management light

Timing-related fault codes should be investigated straight away. Book a diagnostic.

Oil dilution

A rising oil level, or oil that smells of diesel, can mean fuel is getting into the oil, which is hard on the belt.

No belt change on file

If the vehicle is nearing 6 years or 100,000 miles and the belt has never been done, it is time to book.

£1,050 including VAT for front-wheel-drive Transit Custom, Tourneo Custom and Transit FWD, £1,150 for rear-wheel-drive Transit, and £1,250 for the Ranger. For the Mondeo, S-MAX, Galaxy and Kuga, call us for a price. Every price includes the belt, oil pump drive belt, tensioner and idlers, a genuine Ford cover, sump and bolt, correct oil and filter, and an oil strainer clean.

Ford reduced the interval for the timing belt, tensioner and idlers on the Transit and Transit Custom from 10 years or 150,000 miles to 6 years or 100,000 miles, saying it was to address belt life problems caused by oil dilution and how the vehicle is used. Many owners are still working to the old figure.

We would not. Ford shortened the interval because belts were not lasting as long as expected, particularly on vehicles with a lot of stop-start use. If yours is approaching 6 years or 100,000 miles, book it in rather than waiting.

Aftermarket covers and sumps can have fitment tolerances that affect the oil sealing around the belt. Genuine Ford parts mean the job is done to factory specification, with the correct clearances and sealing. We also fit a genuine Ford crankshaft bolt, which should only be used once.

The rear-wheel-drive Transit takes more work than the front-wheel-drive Transit Custom, so the price is higher. The Ranger is different again. Send us your reg and we will confirm which applies.

It is a long job, usually about a working day. Availability changes, so check the booking tool for the current slots, or ask us when you call.

Not as standard, because on the EcoBlue the water pump is not driven by the wet belt. It is a common wear item on higher-mileage engines though, so we offer it as an add-on at +£65 while everything is accessible.

A failed belt can block the oil strainer, starve the engine of oil, bend valves and damage pistons. Repairs often run to thousands of pounds, and a van that is off the road for a long engine job costs a business money too.
