Need number plates in Stevenage? We can have them ready within the hour

Cracked plate? Faded plate? Lost one on the A1(M)? Bought a car and want a fresh set? Book in with TGPP Autocare at Chells Industrial Units and your new number plates can be ready within the hour. We're a busy garage, so it's appointment only. A quick phone call is all it takes. We cover Stevenage, Knebworth, Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock and Welwyn Garden City, and most of our plate customers are local people who just want it sorted quickly.

How it works

1. Call or WhatsAppTell us your registration and whether you need one plate or two.
2. Book a timeWe're busy, so appointments only. We'll confirm a slot.
3. Bring your documentsPhoto ID and your V5C or other proof of entitlement (the law asks us to check, see below).
4. Ready within the hourFitted properly, so you drive away legal.

Why change your number plates?

  • They're cracked, snapped or peeling. Plates get knocked in car parks and by stones on the road. A split plate can still be a problem even if you can read it.
  • They've faded or gone yellow. Old plates dull over time and the letters become harder to read, especially in the dark or on camera.
  • The fixings have failed. A plate hanging off, held on with tape or cable ties is an easy MOT fail and an easy way to attract attention from the police.
  • You've been given the wrong ones. Odd fonts, wrong spacing or novelty styles are not legal. We supply standard plates.
  • You've bought a used car. It's a cheap way to start fresh with a car you know is right.
  • Dirty, scratched or discoloured. Plates that can't be read by ANPR cameras at car parks or on the road can get you a parking or camera notice by mistake.
The risk of leaving it: driving with a number plate that doesn't meet the rules can mean a fine of up to £1,000. A £14 fitted plate is a very cheap way to avoid that.

Why get your plates from TGPP Autocare?

  • Fitted for the price. £14 for one, £26 for two. Or just buy the plates from £11 if you'd rather fit them yourself.
  • Quick. Ready within the hour. Appointment only, so call first.
  • Local. We're at Unit 8, Chells Industrial Units, Chells Way, Stevenage, SG2 0LQ.

  • Easy to add on. Already coming in for an MOT or a service? Ask us to sort the plates at the same time.
  • 5-star on Google. Our customers tell people we do what we say.

Number plate rules in the UK, in plain English

Number plates look simple, but there are strict rules. Here's what matters for most drivers:

  • Front plates must be white and rear plates must be yellow, with black characters.
  • Plates must be reflective and meet the current British Standard (BS AU 145e).
  • The characters must use the correct font and spacing. No script fonts, no stretched letters, no letters rearranged to spell something.
  • Plates must be clean, undamaged and easy to read from a distance.
  • They must be firmly attached to the front and back of the vehicle.

Plates that don't follow these rules can fail an MOT and may get you a fine.

Why do we need to see your documents?

Under UK law, anyone supplying number plates has to check who you are and that you're entitled to display the registration, even if you're just replacing like for like. That's why we ask for photo ID and proof you own or are entitled to use the vehicle, such as the V5C. It protects you and it helps keep cloned plates off the road.

Tips to make your number plates last

  • Wash them with the rest of the car. Warm soapy water is enough. Avoid harsh chemicals and wire wool.
  • Check them when you wash the car. Look for cracks, lifting edges and loose fixings.
  • Don't add stickers or covers. Anything over the characters can make the plate illegal.
  • Keep a note of your reg. If a plate is ever lost or stolen, report it and get a replacement quickly.
  • Replace them as a pair. A new rear next to a tired old front looks odd and you may end up back here sooner.

Number plate facts you might not know

Why yellow? Rear plates have been yellow in the UK since the early 1970s, so that the rear of a vehicle stands out from the front, particularly at night.
What does your reg say? Since 2001, UK plates use two letters for the area, two numbers for the age, then three random letters. The age number changes every March and September, so a September 2026 registration carries a 76.
Why the checks? A registration is tied to you and your vehicle. You can't just buy any reg you like, which is why plate suppliers have to check documents and why cloned plates are so hard to get away with.
