PSA PureTech Engine Problems — What Owners Need to Know
The 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines power millions of cars. Here's what the known issues are, which models are affected, and what you can do about it.

What Is the PSA PureTech Engine?
The PSA PureTech (also referred to as EB-series) is a family of small-displacement petrol engines produced by Stellantis (formerly PSA Group) and used across Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Vauxhall, and Opel vehicles since 2012. The 1.2 PureTech Turbo in particular became the go-to engine for a huge range of popular hatchbacks and family cars.
Winning multiple "Engine of the Year" awards, it was praised for its combination of performance and economy. Unfortunately, several recurring mechanical issues have emerged — particularly in earlier versions — that owners and used car buyers need to be aware of.
The Most Commonly Reported PureTech Problems
Wet Timing Belt Failure
Like the Ford EcoBoost, the PureTech uses a wet timing belt (belt in oil). The belt degrades over time and can snap without warning, causing catastrophic internal engine damage. Bent valves, damaged pistons, and engine write-offs are the typical outcome. PSA extended the recommended replacement interval on some models, but many owners are still unaware their belt is overdue. This is the single most important issue to address.
Oil Consumption and Leaks
Higher-than-expected oil consumption has been widely reported, particularly on early 1.2 PureTech units. Degraded valve stem seals and piston rings allow oil to burn during combustion. If oil levels drop too low, this accelerates belt wear and increases the risk of belt failure. Always check your oil level between services.
Thermostat and Cooling System Failures
Thermostat failures have been reported across multiple PureTech variants, causing erratic engine temperatures. Overheating places additional stress on the wet timing belt and can cause additional internal damage. If your temperature gauge behaves inconsistently, get it diagnosed promptly.
Water Pump Deterioration
The water pump on some PureTech engines has shown premature wear, particularly on higher-mileage examples. A failing water pump can lead to overheating and, in a worst case, contributes to wet belt failure. When carrying out a wet belt replacement, it's best practice to replace the water pump at the same time.
EGR Valve Fouling
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve fouling has been noted in PureTech engines used predominantly on short journeys. Carbon buildup restricts airflow and can cause rough running, increased fuel consumption, and fault codes. Regular motorway driving helps keep the EGR clean.
Which Cars Have the PureTech Engine?
| Brand | Model | Engine |
|---|---|---|
| Peugeot | 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, 508 | 1.0, 1.2 PureTech |
| Citroën | C3, C4, C4 Cactus, C5 Aircross, Berlingo | 1.2 PureTech |
| DS | DS3, DS4, DS5, DS7 Crossback | 1.2 PureTech |
| Vauxhall / Opel | Corsa, Astra, Crossland, Grandland | 1.2 Turbo (PureTech) |
If your car is fitted with a 1.0 or 1.2 PureTech petrol engine and hasn't had a wet belt replacement, it's worth checking when this is due based on the age and mileage of the vehicle.
Has PSA Acknowledged These Issues?
PSA/Stellantis have made revisions to PureTech engines over the years, and some replacement intervals have been updated. However, there has been no formal recall covering all affected vehicles in the UK for wet belt failures, and many owners only discover the issue after a breakdown or expensive repair.
If you bought your vehicle used and don't have a full service history, the safest assumption is that the wet belt has not been changed — particularly on vehicles over 5 years old or 50,000 miles.
💡 Buying a PureTech Car?
If you're purchasing a used Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall or DS with a 1.2 PureTech engine, always request evidence of a wet belt replacement. If one hasn't been carried out, factor the cost into your negotiation — or get it done immediately after purchase. We're happy to inspect any vehicle you're considering. Call us on 01438 232556.
