One of Ford’s lesser-discussed petrol engines, the 1.1 Ti‑VCT (Sigma family, used in 2017–2023 Fiestas), also features a wet timing belt system—much like the more notorious 1.0 EcoBoost
What Is a Wet‑Belt & Why It Matters
- Operates inside the engine, constantly bathed in oil, lubricated and cooled.
- Offers quieter operation and better friction control—but also a reliance on oil quality.
- Ford recommended belt replacement every 10 years or 100–125k miles, but many experts advise earlier—often around 8 years or 80k–100k miles .
- TGPP-Autocare, quoting EcoBoost practice, suggests 8 years/80k miles might be safest
Why the 1.1 Ti‑VCT Still Uses a Wet‑Belt
Ford phased wet-belts out in favour of chains later—but the 1.1 Ti‑VCT stuck with it, likely for compactness, noise reduction, and emissions
Why It’s Not as Scary as You Think
- Chains have failures too—lots of times they stretch or fail early.
- Wet-belts are reliable when maintained: regular oil changes and using correct spec oil drastically improve lifespan .
- Proactive replacements (by 8 years/80k miles) mean avoiding the catastrophic expense of belt failure.

That’s good to know! I thought it was just the 1.0 ecoboosts and the 2.0 ecoblues on the fords
Yeah, the 1.1 Vti is based on the 1.0 ecoboost engine and very similar but without a turbo.
I think the dealers should explain that the car has a Wetbelt when purchasing so people are aware
So are these less of an issue?
Yeah so they aren’t as bad, it uses port injection rather then direct injection, so the oil is less likely to get fuel dilution, which is a big issue for the wet belts. Also under less stress, due to the minimal power output and no turbo, so it's generally a reliable engine.
