April 2025 PureTech Chain Conversion New Technology By TGPP Autocare
If you own a Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Vauxhall or any other vehicle powered by a PureTech engine, you’ll already know the name that haunts owners and mechanics alike: the wet timing belt. For years, the industry has had no permanent answer — just increasingly frequent replacements. That changes now.

Why PureTech Wet Belts Are a Known Problem

The PureTech engine family — covering the 1.0, 1.2 and 1.6 litre variants used across PSA and Stellantis vehicles — uses a timing belt that runs in oil. In theory, this was an elegant solution: a compact, quiet belt system that uses engine oil for lubrication, doing away with the complexity of a dry belt or a traditional chain. In practice, it became one of the most problematic timing systems in modern automotive history.

  • Wet belts degrade faster than manufacturers initially projected, with real-world failures occurring from as low as 40,000 miles
  • Oil contamination accelerates belt deterioration, especially if oil change intervals slip
  • Belt failure is catastrophic — on these engines, the valves will meet the pistons
  • Replacement intervals were revised downwards multiple times, catching many owners off guard
  • Each replacement is a substantial job — not a simple belt swap
  • The cost adds up across a vehicle’s lifetime, often running to thousands of pounds

At TGPP Autocare, we’ve replaced more PureTech wet belts than we care to count. We know the job inside out — and we’ve been waiting for a proper solution. That solution has arrived.

Introducing Pro-Chain:
Timing Chain Conversion
for PureTech Engines

Pro-Chain is a specialist engineering company that has developed what the industry has needed for years: a complete, bolt-on timing chain conversion kit specifically designed for PureTech engines. No modifications to the engine block. No specialist tooling you don’t already have. Just a permanent upgrade from a wet belt system to a robust, reliable timing chain — the same way performance and longevity-focused engines have been built for decades.

Pro-Chain conversion kits replace the entire wet belt timing system with a precision-engineered chain drive, including everything required to complete the conversion. Once fitted, your engine no longer has a wet belt to worry about. It’s a one-time fix.

01
Remove the Wet Belt
The existing wet timing belt, tensioner and associated components are removed using standard timing tools.
02
Install Chain Kit
New Pro-Chain sprockets, guides, tensioner and chain are fitted as a complete, matched system.
03
Oil Line Connection
The dedicated oil supply line is connected, ensuring the chain tensioner and system is properly lubricated.
04
Set & Verify Timing
Engine timing is set and verified to factory specification using the same tools as the original belt job.

Because the installation mirrors the procedure for a wet belt replacement, and uses the same timing tools already in use at specialist garages, TGPP Autocare can offer this conversion without any compromise on quality or accuracy. This is precisely the kind of technical job we do every week.

Two Kits. Every
PureTech Variant
Covered.

Pro-Chain offers separate kits for naturally aspirated and turbocharged PureTech engines — because the turbo variants have meaningfully different mechanical requirements and a single kit cannot safely do both. Select the correct kit for your engine below.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Is a timing chain conversion really a permanent fix? +
Yes. A properly installed timing chain does not have a scheduled replacement interval in the way a timing belt does. Chains are designed to last the life of the engine under normal operating conditions. By converting from the wet belt system to a Pro-Chain chain drive, you eliminate the root cause of the recurring cost and reliability concern entirely.
Do I need to modify my engine for this conversion? +
No. The Pro-Chain kit is a true bolt-on solution. It is engineered to fit without requiring any modification to the engine block or internal components. The installation uses the same timing tools as the original wet belt replacement procedure.
When will the kits be available? +
The Pro-Chain PureTech kits are currently available for pre-order, with units reserved from the first production run. Estimated delivery is in the second half of 2026, though this is indicative and may depend on production scheduling. We recommend pre-ordering early as initial quantities are limited. Contact TGPP Autocare to register your interest now.
What is included in the £829 kit price? +
The £829 price is for the Pro-Chain conversion kit itself, which includes the timing chain, sprockets, chain guides, tensioner, oil supply line and all associated hardware required to complete the conversion. Fitting labour is quoted separately — please contact us for a fitting quotation specific to your vehicle.
Does this affect my warranty or MOT? +
The conversion is a mechanical improvement to the timing system and does not affect your MOT eligibility. As for manufacturer warranty: if your vehicle is still within its original manufacturer warranty period, any modification to the engine could affect that warranty, so this is worth considering. For vehicles outside of manufacturer warranty, there is no issue. TGPP Autocare can discuss this with you in the context of your specific vehicle.
My car already has a wet belt fitted recently. Can I still convert? +
Yes. The conversion can be carried out regardless of when your last wet belt replacement was. In fact, some owners choose to time it so the conversion coincides with a wet belt service that was due anyway, making the most efficient use of the labour involved. We can advise on the best approach for your situation.
How do I know which kit I need? +
You need to identify whether your PureTech engine is naturally aspirated (non-turbo) or turbocharged. This can be confirmed by your engine code, which can be found in characters 6, 7 and 8 of your VIN plate, in your vehicle’s technical documentation, or stamped on the engine block itself. See our engine compatibility table above, or call us on 01438 232556 and we’ll look it up for you using your registration plate.
