The PureTech wet belt problem: a chain conversion is on the way
Pro-Chain has developed a bolt-on timing chain conversion kit for the 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech, both naturally aspirated and turbo. The kit is £829. Here is exactly where things stand, and what we do and do not know yet.

- We have bought a car to test the kit on. Its kit is also due in December.
What we don't know yet
- How long the job takes, because we have not fitted one yet.
- What fitting will cost in labour, so we cannot give a fitted price.
- When kits we order to sell will arrive.
- How the kit performs in the real world, which is why we are testing it first.
That is all we know at the moment, and we cannot give you any more information than this. As soon as we have kits, and a fitted price based on actually doing the job, we will update this page and tell everyone on the waiting list.

Come and road test it first
We have bought a PureTech car specifically to test the kit on. Its kit is due in December too. Once it is fitted and we have driven it ourselves, you will be able to come and road test the car before you decide whether to go ahead. We want you to see it working, not just read about it.
Your wet belt due now? Do not wait for the chain. If your belt is due or overdue, get it replaced. A failed wet belt can destroy an engine, and the chain kit is not here yet. The problem
Why the PureTech wet belt worries owners
If you own a Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Vauxhall or another car with a PureTech engine, you will probably know about the wet timing belt. It is one of the best-known problems with these engines, and until now the only answer has been to keep replacing the belt.
What goes wrong
The PureTech uses a timing belt that runs in engine oil. It was meant to be compact and quiet, but the belt can break down early and shed rubber into the oil.
- We have seen belts in a poor state at around 40,000 miles, well short of the official interval
- Dirty or wrong-specification oil, and lots of short journeys, make it worse
- Debris from the belt can block the oil strainer and starve the engine of oil
- If the belt fails, the damage can be severe
- Replacing it is a proper job, not a simple belt swap, and it has to be repeated
We have replaced a lot of PureTech wet belts, and we know that job well. A chain conversion would be the first real alternative to doing it again and again.
The solution
Pro-Chain: a timing chain kit for the PureTech
Pro-Chain is a specialist engineering company that has developed a bolt-on timing chain conversion kit for the PureTech. It replaces the wet belt with a chain drive, so there is no belt left to wear out and shed into the oil.
A chain should not need a scheduled replacement the way a belt does. But we have not fitted one yet, so we cannot tell you from experience how it behaves on the road. That is exactly why we are testing it on our own car first.
How Pro-Chain say it goes on
This is Pro-Chain's description of the job. We will report back on how it works in practice once we have done one.

Remove the wet belt and its tensioner and related parts.

Fit the chain kit: sprockets, guides, tensioner and chain as a matched set.

Connect the oil line that supplies the chain tensioner.

Set and check the timing to the engine's specification.
Pro-Chain describe it as a bolt-on kit that needs no modification to the engine block, using the same timing tools as a normal wet belt job. We would like to fit these in house, but we will not promise how complicated the job is, or what it costs, until we have done one ourselves.

Each kit is made for specific PureTech engine codes. You can find yours in your car's technical documents, in characters 6, 7 and 8 of the VIN, or stamped on the engine block. Not sure? Send us your registration and we will look it up.

It could. Changing the timing system is a modification to the engine, so it may affect a manufacturer warranty. It could also affect any Stellantis extended cover or compensation claim. Check with the warranty provider before you go ahead. If your car is out of warranty, this does not apply.
In principle, yes. The conversion does not depend on when the last belt was done. Some owners may prefer to time it with a belt that is due anyway, to make the most of the labour involved. We will advise once we know more about the job.
